Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen storyline?

Could this be the storyline for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? Well there's not that much to it, but we are starting to hear glimmers of what the film could be about, mainly through the comics that are bridging the gap between the first and the second films, because there will be a gap, a big gap.

It seems that between the first and second films something like twenty years could have passed, and no wonder, there needs to be a lot of regrouping, and...spoiler coming up if you haven't seen the first film...

There needs to be a new lead villain. I wonder if the ending of Transformers was the right move and they should have really kept Megatron going in some way. Oh I'm sure he'll come back, and he could well be back in the second film since the title hints at that as much as it does the revenge of the Decepticons in general.

Whatever the focus of that title we know it's going to be dark and end none too positively for the Autobots, after all this is the second and it's liable to get worse before it gets better.

Anyway, over at MTV through Rope of Silicon they have a story about how the series of five comics are going to bridge the gap between the first and second films, and that the enemy in the second film is The Fallen. Chris Mowry and Alex Milne are going to create the comics and Mowry talks about the story.

“[We're going to] explore the background of The Fallen — the main villain of the movie — as well as expand on the ‘Reign of Starscream’ story that we’re doing and tie everything in to what this next movie is going to be...The next movie starts out with just tons of action and there’s obviously going to be a lot of questions, so we’re hoping to answer some of those beforehand.”

Straight into the action with a lot of questions? Well we're not typically going to get those answered in a Michael Bay film as we race forward with the action and adventure.

Mowry has already written Reign of Starscream, which sees the robot head off into space from the first film and return to Cybertron to try and recreate the All Spark cube.

“‘Reign of Starscream’ starts right at the very end of that big last action sequence in Mission City. Starscream realizes that Frenzy, the little portable jump drive had accessed all the information the humans had about the All Spark, so he gets this idea of, ‘If I could get all the information that’s stored within Frenzy’s body, I might be able to rebuild the All Spark back on Cybertron and therefore everyone will think I’m this great leader.’ His motivations are more for the species. He’s definitely at odds with what Prime and Megatron have been doing. He thinks that they’ve both been consumed with greed, for their own selfish reasons, but as he finds out, his plans start to fall through as he’s kind of becoming overwhelmed with the same greed that they had.”

So we understand what his motivations are, and he steps up to be the new bad guy leader.

However Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen does sound like it's going to be a little difficult to follow to begin with and that it's going to feature a ton of new robots and the new five part comic series Destiny will try to explain all that.

“We’re definitely taking every character that we can from the sequel...So you’ll see some Sector 7 involvement and how they developed into a new group that will be introduced. The same thing with some of the new characters, we’ll explain how they get to Earth. Because like I said, [the sequel] starts out with this giant battle so people will be wondering ‘Hey, where did that guy come from?’”

Sounds like it will be a bit of mayhem to begin with, and that there'll be a lot to take in, especially if you haven't read the comics beforehand.

Reading up about the Fallen, he is one of the original Transformers created by Primus who betrayed him by siding with his dark twin Unicron. When Primus and Unicron battled for the final time, Unicron and the Fallen went through a black hole, Unicron to another dimension and Fallen trapped between them.

The storyline that saw him retrieved from there, according to Wikipedia, was Transformers: The War Within. He was rescued and began recruiting Transformers with unusual qualities who would rescue Unicron from the other dimension, however the Autobot and Decepticon forces joined together and battled him to defeat him.

Are we going to begin to hear more of the original Transformers and their creators then? Is this the way the new film is going to go, or is this all smoke and mirrors?

Sounds like we could see Fallen and Starscream in the story, they both make sense, and looking to the creation of the robots would be logical if they are working with Sector 7 now, after all humans would want to know all about how they came to be.

What do you think? Would you take time to read the comics
before the film, or will you leap into Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and catch up as the film goes on?
